About the event

Syria Forum

Hosted by UA CMES with co-sponsors of SGS, SGPP, and MENAS.

This panel will examine the current events in Syria and the potential impacts it will have on American Foreign Policy. Three UA affiliates will speak at this event. Prof. Leila Hudson, MENAS, will give an overview of the internal Syrian political layout including the current balance of power. Dr. Hudson will discuss some of the communications of Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) the dominant organization in Syrian politics at the moment. Then Prof. Alex Braithwaite, SGPP, will discuss some of the prospects of people returning home to Syria. In past his research has focused on Syrian refugees in Lebanon, and he will share some of his current research on the potential return of these refugees to Syria. Finally, Ambassador David Dunford, retired, CMES Governing Board member, will speak on how the changes to Syria since the fall of the Assad regime and the new U.S. Administration could potentially impact the state of American foreign policy in the
region.
