Javier Corrales

Javier Corrales is professor of Political Science at Amherst College in Amherst, Massachusetts. He obtained his Ph.D. in government from Harvard University in 1996. He is an internationally recognized expert on democratization, economic governance, democratic backsliding, and populism. His research and teaching focus on Latin America and Europe. In 2023, he published the book, Autocracy Rising, which discusses Venezuela’s transition to authoritarianism, drawing from multiple other cases. He periodically teaches short courses at the University of Amsterdam, and writes op-eds for The New York Times, Foreign Policy, and Foreign Affairs.
