About the event
with Dr. Kori Schake, senior fellow and the director of foreign and defense policy studies at the American Enterprise Institute.
The United States has a complex history with Europe beginning with the revolution from British rule. Within U.S. policy there has been an enduring struggle between those favoring engagement with Europe and those that have opposed entanglements in European affairs. After the fall of the Berlin Wall, many scholars believed that the NATO alliance would fade away without the threat of the USSR. However, NATO, in compliance with Article 5, deployed forces to Afghanistan and endured. The Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022 further bolstered the importance of the alliance. However, the current U.S. administration has expressed deep concerns over U.S. commitments to NATO and other aspects of the transatlantic relationship like trade with the EU. Dr. Kori Schake, a senior fellow and the director of foreign and defense policy studies at the American Enterprise Institute (AEI), will help us better understand the transatlantic relationship and its future.
