SGPP Arizona Policy Lab Roundtable: Evaluating the State of Democracy in the US from a Global and Practical Perspective

Time & Location

Oct 13, 2025, 6:00 PM – 7:30 PM MST

Virtually through Zoom and ENR2 Building, Room S107, University of Arizona

About the event

Democracies require free and fair elections and checks on the executive. On both fronts, prominent global democratic indices have downgraded the US. In this panel, we bring together an expert and sitting political figure to evaluate the health of US democracy from a theoretical, global, and practical perspective. SGPP Professor Paul Schuler will discuss global trends and measures to assess the validity of measures showing democratic backsliding in the US. Washington State Lt. Gov. Denny Heck will provide insights from politician’s perspective and his views on where US democracy stands, how it got here, and where it is going.
